Norwich City Season 3 Part 1

Only 500k remains in the kitty from the old season before a new budget is announced, so use the early part of the summer to prey on the weak and financial stricken. Four clubs are in receivership so will basically accept any offer, my choices are Leeds duo Seth Johnson (250k) and Aaron Lennon (230k) plus promising youngster David Bryan (16k) from Southend. Also add Chelsea duo Celestine Babayaro and Jesper Gronkjaer who both have expiring contracts.

The budget for the new season is 7m, with a fair bit of business done already the focus is on getting a centre-back and Phillippe Mexes arrives from Auxerre for his 4m minimum release fee. On the eve of the new season, Zema Abbey finally agrees a new 3-year contract so hopefully all set for a push to get into Europe.

Gronkjaer hits the ground running with a goal and assist on his debut as we start the season with a 3-1 win over Fulham, he then provides another assist against Liverpool, holding our own at Anfield in a 1-1 draw is an encouraging early sign. In the next three matches our performances continue to be fairly good but unable to get the 'deserved' results although with two missed penalties from we only have ourselves to blame, or more precisely Lionel Morgan and Mexes.

Manage to edge out Derby and Birmingham in a couple of even games with Gronkjaer again being the star performer, it leaves us 3rd in the early standings before a trip to Arsenal sends us crashing back to reality. We lose 2-0 but barely threaten and it is reminiscent of last season’s struggles against the top sides, the fixture computer has once again piled the big matches on top of each other so travel to Stamford Bridge and actually put in a decent showing before losing 4-2. A third loss in a row follows with Man Utd beating us 1-0. So a disappointing 14 points from opening 10 games but at least the three top teams are out of the way.
